Christmas in Musana 2017

January 24, 2018

Our annual community Christmas party was, yet again, a giant success! Thanks to our many generous donors, we were able to celebrate Christmas with over 800 people this year. The celebrations were complete with food, entertainment, and an awards ceremony, as well as gifts for our registered children the next day. We had many of our kids perform skits, songs, poems, and dances for the party, which everyone always enjoys. We also welcomed some dancers from Harare, who were a big hit with everyone, especially the gogos!

We were very honoured to have the chief attend our party this year, as well as a local school headmaster and counsellor. The chief's attendance in particular was a huge deal, and he came over to our staff afterwards to thank LGTH for being such a helpful, integral part of the community.

As happens every year, prizes were given out to the children for various achievements in school, such as the highest grades, the most improved, and the best student in each class. It's always a very exciting part of the day, and very often family members will come dancing up onto the stage to celebrate with the recipient.

We also awarded our second Let's Give Them Hope Child of the Year. This award is presented to a child who is in need of sponsorship but is not yet sponsored, who is in good character, has good attendance both at school and at the program, does their best in school, and is always well behaved. The recipient will have their school fees paid for the following year, and, if they do very well, will also have their next exams paid for. This year's award has gone to Willard, due to his exemplary character, hard work, and kind, respectful spirit. Willard was very happy to receive this award, and has promised to work even harder in the future.

Another highlight of the day was the meal; we killed a cow - which is a huge honour to the community in Musana - and everyone was able to enjoy a hot and delicious meal, thanks to the tireless hard work of our wonderful volunteer and staff team.

We were so thrilled to be able to give out Christmas gift baskets and chickens to every single one of our children this year. People came early in the morning the day after the party to wait for their gifts, which were, for many of the families, the only gift they received.

The weather was wonderful this year, and everyone went home very happy; our Christmas celebration continues to be the highlight of the year for most of the community. A giant thank you to everyone who donated so generously to this event!! It would have been impossible without you.
